Question

(a) What do you understand by the term "potential difference"?
(b) What is meant by saying that the potential difference between two points is 1 volt?
(c) What is the potential difference between the terminals of a battery if 250 joules of work is required to transfer 20 coulombs of charge from one terminal of battery to the other?
(d) What is a voltmeter ? How is a voltmeter connected in the circuit to measure the potential difference between two points. Explain with the help of a diagram.
(e) State- whether a voltmeter has a high resistance or a low resistance. Give reason for your answer.

Solution

a)-The difference in potential between two points that represents the work involved or the energy released in the transfer of a unit quantity of electricity from one point to the other
b)-It mean that the amount of energy required to move charge from one point to other is 1J.
c)

Work done = 250 joules,

Q = 20 coulombs,

We know that V (volt) = WQ

V = 25020

V = 12.5V.

d)

A voltmeter is an instrument that measures the difference in electrical potential between two points in an electric circuit. An analog voltmeter moves a pointer across a scale in proportion to the circuit’s voltage; a digital voltmeter provides a numerical display of the potential difference.

Voltmeter: Demonstration voltmeter from a physics class

In order for a voltmeter to measure a device’s voltage, it must be connected in parallel to that device. This is necessary because objects in parallel experience the same potential difference.

d)_
-As we know, V=I*R, i., in other words, voltage across a resistor equals the product of its resistance and current flowing through it.

Now, if the voltmeter has low resistance, most of the current will pass through it, rather than passing through the resistance. Thus the voltmeter will give an erroneous reading.

So as to prevent this sort of a problem, a voltmeter has inherent high resistance.
