The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950, earlier it was adopted by the constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949. The preamble to the constitution of India declares India to be Sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, republic. The term ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ were added in 1976. Sovereign implies the absence of any external authority in governance. Democratic means the government would be elected by people. Republic implies that the head of the state President is to be elected not inherited.
