The onset of an action potential is marked by the opening of voltage-gated Na⁺ channels. The depolarization that occurs due to this, causes the neuron membrane to attain a voltage that triggers the opening of voltage-gated K⁺ channels. Then K⁺ ions rush out through this channels, reducing the positive charge inside the neuron, it causes repolarization of the neuronal membrane.
