In the reaction the Al is changing to Al(OH)4 . Its oxidation state is changing from 0 to +3. Increase in oxidation state indicates the element is oxidized,
And MnO4 is converting to MnO2. Its oxidation state is changing from +7 to +4. A decrease in oxidation state indicates the element is reduced.
Thus for this reaction, the element X is Mn which is reduced and the element Y is Al which is oxidized.
