In the reaction the $$Al$$ is changing to $${Al(OH)_4}^- $$ . Its oxidation state is changing from $$0$$ to $$+3$$. Increase in oxidation state indicates the element is oxidized,
And $${MnO_4}^-$$ is converting to $$MnO_2$$. Its oxidation state is changing from $$+7$$ to $$+4$$. A decrease in oxidation state indicates the element is reduced. 
Thus for this reaction, the element $$X$$ is $$Mn$$ which is reduced and the element $$Y$$ is $$Al$$ which is oxidized.
