Question

Algae are included in which of the following kingdom and why:
Monera , Protista , Plantae

Open in App
Solution

Monera are prokaryotic unicellular bacteria whose genetic material is dispersed loosely in the cell. On the other hand, the genetic material of plants and other eukaryotes is held in the cell nucleus. Therefore, blue green algae are placed in Kingdom Monera. But you should also note that algaes are of many types. In the above statement I mentioned blue green algae. Given below are some other catogories; Some general biology textbook authors place the microscopic, unicellular green algae (Division Chlorophyta) in the Kingdom Protista, and place the larger, multicellular (macroscopic) green algae (Division Chlorophyta) in the Kingdom Plantae. They also place the macroscopic, multicellular brown algae (Division Phaeophyta) and red algae (Division Rhodophyta) in the Kingdom Plantae. In fact, some authors place all of the algae divisions in the Kingdom Plantae. Although the Kingdom Protista includes mostly unicellular organisms, I think they belong to Kingdom Protista. So I recomend to go with the first example, because that is more accepted. And in exams if kingdom is asked you may specify "blue green algae",insted of "algae"
