Solution

Alkali metals dissolve in liquid ammonia to give blue coloured solutions, which upon standing slowly liberate H2 . The blue colour of metal-ammonia solutions is due to the presence of solvated electrons.
Solutions of alkali metals in liquid ammonia are intensely colored and good conductors of electricity due to the presence of solvated electrons, which are not attached to single atoms. A solvated electron is loosely associated with a cavity in the ammonia solvent that is stabilized by hydrogen bonds.
Example : M+(x+y)NH3[M(NH3)x]++[e(NH3)y]
