Myanmar gained independence and established a democracy in 1948. However, things took a turn when Myanmar was taken over by a military dictatorship in 1962.

Aung San Suu Kyi emerged as the most visible face of the pro-democracy struggle that followed. In 1990, an election was held which was won by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy. However, the military regime refused to give up control. Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest, though she continued to lead the struggle. For her efforts, she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
