Question

An automobile vehicle has a mass of 1500 kg. What must be the force between the vehicle and the road if the vehicle is to be stopped with a negative acceleration of 1.7 m/s2 ?

Solution

Given,
Mass of the automobile vehicle (m) = 1500 kg
Acceleration of the vehicle (a) = - 1.7 m/s2
As mass of the vehicle remains same we can use the formula,
F = m a
Force required (F) = mass (m) x acceleration(a) = 1500 kg x - 1.7 m/s2 = - 2550 N.
Negative sign indicates that the direction of force will be oppsoite to the motion of the vehicle.
Thus, 2550 N force will act between the vehicle and the road to produce a negative acceleration of 1.7 m/s2
