Question

An infinitely long string uniformly charged with a linear charge density λ1 and a segment of length uniformly charged with linear charge density λ2 lie in a plane at right angles to each other and are separated by a distance r0 as shown in figure. The force with which these two interact is λ1λ24πϵ0ln(x), then find the value of x , if l=r0.

Solution

Electric field due to infinitely long charged wire at distance r from it is 2kλr

Now, we take small element dr on wire (2) which is having distance r from wire (1)

Now, force on this element =(λ2dr)×2kλ1r

or dF=2kλ1λ2drr

Total force =dF=r0+lr02kλ1λ2rdr=2kλ1λ2ln(r0+lr0)=λ1λ24πϵ0ln(4)
