Question

an organic acid on reaction with sulphuric acid produces two oxides of carbon

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
Higher organic acids will only react with sulphuric acid and that too under very strong and rigorous conditions, producing carbon dioxide as the only oxide of carbon.
Carbon monoxide cannot be produced under such conditions because large amount of heat will be produced which will oxidize CO to CO2.
