Question

An organic compound A with molecular formula C3H6O is resistant to oxidation but forms compound B C3H8O on reduction, compound B reacts with HBr from C and C reacts with Mg from Grignard reagent. D reacts with A to form a product which on hydrolysis gives E. Identify A,B,C,D,E

Solution

Since A with molecular formula C3H6O is resistant to oxidation A should be CH3COCH3 not CH3CH2CHO. A on reduction give isopropanol (B) which reacts with HBr to give 2Bromopropane (C). C reacts with Mg to give Grignard reagent D. D reacts with A to give E .
