On the last day of the lesson, when Franz was not able to recite a grammar rule, M. Hamel blamed himself for Franz's lack of knowledge. He regretted sending students to perform chores such as watering the garden, instead of making them study. Further, M. Hamel regretted giving students holidays when he wanted to go fishing. However, M. Hamel's biggest regret was not having more time to educate his students about their language and culture.
