Answer the following questions:

a) Calculate the EMF of the cell for the reaction
$$Mg_{(s)}+2Ag^+_{(aq)}\rightarrow Mg^{2+}_{(aq)}+2Ag_{(s)}$$.
Given : 
$$E^0_{Mg^{2+} / Mg} = -2.37 V$$
$$E^0_{Ag^+ / Ag} = 0.80 V$$
$$[Mg^{2+}]=0.001 M; [Ag^{+}]=0.0001 M$$

b) What are fuel cells?


Solution

a)
$$\displaystyle E^0_{cell} =E^0_{Ag}-E^0_{Mg}$$
$$\displaystyle E^0_{cell} =0.80-(-2.37)=3.17$$ V
$$\displaystyle E_{cell} =E^0_{cell} = - \dfrac {0.0592}{n}log \dfrac {[Mg^{2+}]}{[Ag^+]^2}$$
$$\displaystyle E_{cell} =3.17  - \dfrac {0.0592}{2}log \dfrac {0.001}{(0.0001)^2}$$
$$\displaystyle  E_{cell} =3.022$$ V
b)
Fuel cells: The galvanic cells in which the energy of the combustion of fuels is directly converted into electrical energy are called fuel cells. Usually, hydrogen gas or methanol is used as a fuel. An example of fuel cell is $$\displaystyle H_2 \: - \: O_2$$  fuel cell.
