The substances which burn in air to produce large amounts of energy in the form of heat and light are known as fuels.
Fuel + Oxygen (on heating)  Energy + Carbon dioxide + Water vapour
Coal, wood and oil are some common fuels. LPG and CNG are modern fuels which do not leave any residue on burning.
