Question

Are zoos necessary for the protection or conservation of some species of animals? Are they useful for educating the public? Are there alternatives to zoos?

Solution

Some species of animals are on the verge of extinction and need to be protected. Zoos can provide a safe habitat for such animals. If planned properly, zoos can certainly serve as a source of information and can be used to educate the public. People can learn about the different species of animals and also about their conservation. However, most zoos are not maintained well and the animals there are forced to live in cramped, confined spaces. Better alternatives to zoos would be wildlife sanctuaries and national parks because they are usually much bigger. The animals are given a lot of area to move around in spaces that resemble their natural habitat.
