Arun needed to measure the area of a cardboard required to create his craft project. The shape he needed is displayed in the figure below. Which of the following could be used by him to determine the approximate area of this flower shaped figure?
Graph paper
A graph paper is a paper that has squares of unit area 1 cm2 drawn all over it. Such papers have various uses across different professions. One such usage is to measure the approximate area of irregular figures. Since the area of each individual square is 1 cm2, the area of the whole figure is determined by the number of squares covered in it.
Since it is irregular, it will not cover each square fully. So the ones which are half covered are counted separately, the ones which are less than half can be ignored and the ones which are more than half are approximated to be a full square. This method although not accurate, gives a good estimation of the area of irregular figures.
