Question

As we move away from the nucleus, in atom the potential energy of electron increases, the total energy as a whole increases. But what happens to the kinetic energy of the electron?

Solution

Kinetic energy of electron α V2.
Velocity of an electron at nth level=V0Xzn
Where V0= velocity of electron in ground state of hydrogen atom.
Kinetic energy of electron α1n2.
As the distance for nucleus increases, the value of n increases. Consequently the kinetic energy of the electron decreases as distance from the nucleus increases.
