Initially, after independence, there was a growing struggle in India to divide the nation into states on linguistic basis. This was rejected by the then government; thereupon, Potti Sreeramulu, representative of Telugu-speakers in the Andhra region, began to fast in protest.

When he died, others took up his protest and finally, in 1953, the Government of India gave in and the state of Andhra Pradesh was born. Eventually, in 1956, it passed the States Reorganisation Act, which drew new lines for other states.
