Amphibians are cold blooded or ectothermic animals as its body temperature does not remain constant but fluctuates with that of the environment. Thus, it is called as a poikilothermic animal. In winter, the temperature of the body activities ceases down. In this condition, it cannot live more on the land, so it takes winter sleep or hibernation in underground. Similarly, during the summer, it once again goes underground to sleep as it's all body activities are slowed down due to high temperature. This is known as summer sleep or aestivation.
