The external ear receives sound waves and directs them to the ear drum. The ear drum vibrates in response to the sound waves and these vibrations are transmitted through the ear ossicles. The ossicles amplify the sound. Sound waves needs to be amplified because the inner ear is filled with fluid and when sound waves travel from air to liquid energy is lost.
The amplified sound waves are transmitted to the inner ear. Once the sound waves reach the inner ear, they are converted into electrical impulses. The auditory nerve sends these impulses to the brain. The brain then translates these electrical impulses as sound.
