Carbon has a valency of four. Thus, it is possible that out of four atoms attached to the carbon, two have an oxidation number of +1 each and the remaining two atoms have the oxidation number of -1 each. Hence, the oxidation number of carbon will be 2(+1)+2(1)=0. For example, the oxidation number of carbon in CH2Cl2 is 0.

During the redox reaction, the oxidizing agent accepts electrons and is reduced. Thus, its oxidation number decreases.
