Excessive use of fertilizers leads to accumulations of nitrates in the water. In infants, excess nitrate reacts with haemoglobin to form non-functional methaemoglobin that impairs oxygen transport. Methemoglobin is a form of hemoglobin that contains ferric [Fe3+] iron and has a decreased ability to bind oxygen. This condition is termed as methemoglobinemia or blue baby syndrome. This disease can damage respiratory and vascular systems and even cause suffocation.
