The burning of fossil fuels releases a huge amount of carbon dioxide which is the major contributor of global warming and the greenhouse effect, hence the burning of fossil fuels causes air pollution. 
But this pollution is not limited to the atmosphere only, burning of fossil fuels also releases the harmful oxides of sulphur and nitrogen which causes acid rain.
