Hormone binds to specific receptors called as hormone receptors. These hormone receptors may be present on the cell surface or inside the cell, depending on the activity and pathway followed by the hormone for stimulation. Peptide hormones have receptors which are present on the cell surface. These receptors are embedded in the plasma membrane and so, called as the transmembrane receptors. Glucocorticoids receptors are the receptors which bind to cortisol or glucocorticoids. Once the receptor binds to ligand they can alter the gene expression.
