Question

Assertion :In electrochemical cell, we can not use KCl in the salt bridge if anodic or cathodic compartment consists of Ag+ or Pb2+ ion. Reason: Salt bridge is employed to maintain the electrical neutrality and to minimize the liquid-liquid junction potential.

Solution

The correct option is B Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion.
If KCl is used in salt bridge, there is a possibility of formation of AgCl and PbCl2. so to avoid the possibility of formation of ppt of AgCl and PbCl2 in electrochemical cell, KCl is not used in the salt bridge.
Due to salt bridge two solution cannot be in contact to each other so liquid junction potential minimised. Inert ion of salt bridge maintains the electrical neutrality.
