Most anti-corrosion methods used to stop iron or steel rusting involve the exclusion of oxygen (in the air) and water i.e. some sort of barrier (other metals like Mg) is applied or formed on the surface of the metal to be protected.

Here, iron acts like cathode (gains electrons) whereas magnesium acts like anode(loss the electrons).
