When a rectangular coil is placed in a uniform magnetic field, the currents in opposite arms is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.
Hence the force acting on each pair of opposite arms due to uniform magnetic fields cancel each other, and hence no net force acts on the coil. However a torque exists. Assertion is correct.
However the force on a coil is not always non- zero. It depends upon the uniformity of the field.
Hence, reason is incorrect.
