Sound waves are mechanical waves and so, sound waves are longitudinal waves. Longitudinal waves vibrate to and fro about mean position through compression and rarefaction. During its motion, the waves give the momentum to the particles of medium and thus it carries energy from one point to another. There are no particles in vacuum, thus sound waves (mechanical waves) cannot transfer energy from one position to another.
Hence sound waves (mechanical waves) require a material medium to travel.
Hence option A is correct.
