Question

Balance the following equation.
$$HNO_{3}+H_{2}S \longrightarrow NO_{2}+H_{2}O+S$$

Solution

Oxidation: $$H_2S^{2-} \longrightarrow S+2e^-....(1)$$
Reduction: $$\overset {+5}{HNO_3}+e^- \longrightarrow \overset {+4}{N}O_2+H_2O....(2)$$

Balancing $$H$$ atoms in $$(1)$$,
$$H_2S \longrightarrow S+2H^++2e^-....(3)$$
Balancing $$H$$ atoms in $$(2)$$,
$$H^++HNO_3+e^- \longrightarrow NO_2+H_2O....(4)$$

Multiplying $$(4)$$ by $$2$$ & adding with $$(3)$$,
$$2HNO_3+H_2S \longrightarrow 2NO_2+S+2H_2O$$
This is the balanced equation.
