Brakes are applied suddenly to a racing car travelling at $$50\ m/s$$. If the car stops after $$20$$ seconds, calculate the retardation of the car.


Solution

Initial velocity of the car $$(u)=50\ m/s$$
Final velocity of the car $$(v)=0$$ (The car stops)
Time $$=20\ s$$
Acceleration $$=\dfrac{v-u}{t}=\dfrac{0-50}{20}=-2.5\ m/s^{2}$$
When it is written as retardation, no negative sign is required.
$$\therefore$$ Retardation of the car $$=2.5\ m/s^{2}$$
