Briefly explain the thermodynamic processes.

Solution

Thermodynamics:

The branch of physical science is concerned with the links between heat and other types of energy (mechanical, electrical, or chemical energy), and, by extension, all forms of energy.

Thermodynamic process:

The states of a thermodynamic system can be changed by interacting with its surrounding through work and heat. When this change occurs in a system, it is said that the system is undergoing a process.

Types of thermodynamic processes:

There are four types of thermodynamic processes, they are,

  1. Isothermal process
  2. Isobaric process
  3. Isochoric process
  4. Adiabatic process

Isothermal process:

  1. When a system transitions from one state to another, its temperature remains constant.
  2. Thus, in our example of hot water in a thermos flask, if we remove a certain quantity of water from the flask but keep its temperature constant at 50 degrees Celsius, the process is said to be an isothermal process.

Isobaric process:

An isobaric process is one in which the pressure in the system remains constant.

Isochoric process:

The process during which the volume of the system remains constant is called an isochoric process. An example of an isochoric process is the heating of gas in a closed cylinder.

Adiabatic process:

An adiabatic process is one in which the heat content of the system or a specific quantity of matter remains constant. As a result, no heat transfer occurs between the system and its surroundings during the adiabatic process.
