Solution

  • Electricity is produced mostly in the following methods in India.
  • (a) Hydroelectric power plants
  • (b) Thermoelectric power plants
  • Hydroelectric power plant: In this method, water is stored in dams at higher altitudes and allowed the water to fall down. Turbine blades are placed at the bottom of water flow so that the turbines rotate. These turbines are further connected to electric generators which produce electric power. In this process the potential energy of water is initially converted into kinetic energy and there after it is converted into electrical energy.
  • Thermoelectric power plant: In this method, coal is burnt to produce heat energy. This heat energy is given to water to produce steam. This steam is fed to turbines so that they start rotating. The turbines are further connected electrical generators to produce electric energy. In this process, heat energy is initially converted to mechanical energy and thereafter electrical energy.
