Question

Calculate the force of gravitation due to earth on a ball of $$1\ kg$$ mass lying on the ground.(Mass of earth $$=6\times 10^3\  km$$; and $$G=6.7\times 10^{-11} Nm^2/kg^2)$$


Solution

Gravitational force between earth and ball,
$$=\dfrac{GMm}{R^2}$$ [Neglecting the radius of ball as it is small]
$$=\dfrac{6.67 \times 10^{-11} \times 6\times 10^{24} \times 1}{(6400 \times 10^3)^2}$$
$$=\dfrac{9.77 \times 10^{-3} \times 10^{-11} \times 10^{29}}{10^{10}}=9.77N$$
