When an onion is cut an irritation is observed in the eyes. This is due to the presence of a chemical called Propanethial s-oxide. This chemical is easily volatile.  
Hence when we cut onion some of the cells are damaged and
this chemical comes out. It vapourises and reach our eyes resulting in irritation and tears in eyes.
