Question

Chemically, salts are the products of neutralisation reactions between acids and bases. These are classified as normal, acidic or basic salts depending upon the extent of neutralisation whether complete or incomplete. Generally, salts can be synthesised in the laboratory as well as prepared commercially. However, many of these exist in nature e.g. Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O). Rock salt or sodium chloride (NaCl), Dolomite (CaCO3·MgCO3), Bauxite(Al2O3·xH2O)etc. Excessive intake of which salt can lead to high blood pressure?

Solution

  1. One mole of sodium chloride or common salt (NaCl) has about 40% sodium (Na) and 60% chloride (Cl2).
  2. It is used as a food preservative.
  3. The excessive intake of Sodium Chloride or common salt(NaCl) can lead to high blood pressure, and heart and kidney diseases.

Hence, excessive intake of sodium chloride salt can lead to high blood pressure.
