Question

Choose the correct match for the property of compounds.

  1. Ionic bond - High melting point, Covalent bond - Low melting point

  2. Ionic bond - Low melting point, Covalent bond - High melting point

  3. Ionic bond - High melting point, Covalent bond - High melting point

  4. Ionic bond - Low melting point, Covalent bond - Low melting point

Solution

The correct option is A

Ionic bond - High melting point, Covalent bond - Low melting point

Ionic compounds are formed due to the strong attractive force between two oppositely charged ions, therefore a huge amount of energy is required to separate or melt the compound which results in a higher melting point.

In covalent compounds, the molecules are held together by force formed when a pair of electrons are shared between two atoms which is comparatively easier to break. Thus a small amount of energy is required to melt these covalent compounds, resulting in a lower melting point.
