When hard water is used in industrial boilers, insoluble salts of calcium and magnesium are formed. They get deposited on the walls of the boiler to form scales during the evaporation of water. These scales decrease the thermal conductivity of the boilers causing a significantly lesser heat transfer to the water inside the boilers. Scaling can even lead to explosion of the container.
