Comment on the statement that 'Colloid is not a substance but a state of substance'.

Open in App
Solution

Under one set of conditions, a substance can exist as a colloid and under different sets of conditions, the same substance can exist as crystalloid. Thus, in water, sodium chloride is a crystalloid whereas in benzene, sodium chloride is a colloid. Also, dilute soap solution is a colloid and concentrated soap solution is a crystalloid. The state of the substance depends on the size of the particles. Colloidal state has particle size in the range of 10 nm to 100 nm.
