Question

Consider a wire of length 4m and cross-sectional area 1mm3 carrying a current of 2A. If each cubic metre of the material contains 1029 free electrons, find the average time taken by an electron to cross the length of the wire.

Solution

=4m, A=1mm2=1×106m2
l=2A, n/V=1029, t=?
i=n AVde
i=1029×1×106×Vd×1.6×1019

Vd=21029×106×1.6×1019

Vd=10.8×104=18000

t=Vd=41/8000=4×8000

t=32000=3.2×104sec.
