Question

Consider the following reaction sequence.
Na2S+Na2SO3+I2A+NaI
A+I2NaI+B
If the molar mass of anhydrous form of B is X (gm/mole) and the number of sulphur atoms per molecule of B is Y, then find the value of X/Y.

Solution

The complete reaction sequence is,
Na2S+Na2SO3+I2Na2S2O3(A)+NaI and Na2S2O3+I2NaI+Na2S4O6(B)
Thus, the molar mass of anhydrous form of B is (X)=270 gm/mole
The number of Sulphur atoms per molecule of B is Y=4
XY=2704=67.50
