Delimitation is the exercise of redrawing the boundaries of the LS and Assembly constituencies to maintain equitable distribution of population across the constituencies. Art. 82 directs the Parliament to provide by law for readjustment of LS and Assembly constituencies after completion of each census.

The Parliament enacted delimitation Acts in 1952, 1963, 1973 and 2002 providing for the appointment of Delimitation Commission to redraw the boundaries of constituencies as per the latest census results.

Census data can be challenged and not the delimitation commission award. Because it submits its report to the president of India who further notifies its report either to accept or not to accept the report.
