Question

Convert Propanoic acid into Ethanoic acid?

Open in App
Solution

Conversion of Propanoic acid into Ethanoic acid:

Step1: Formation of Propionamide:

Propanoic acid when undergoes a reaction with an excess amount of Ammonia gives Propanamide.
CH3CH2COOHPropanoicacidNH3/heatCH3CH2CONH2Propionamide+H2OWater
Step 2: Formation of Ethylamine:

Propanamide on further reacting with Bromine and Potassium hydroxide (Hoffmann bromamide degradation reaction) results in Ethylamine.
CH3CH2CONH2PropionamideBr2/KOHCH3CH2NH2Ethylamine+KBrPotassiumBromide
Step 3: Formation of Ethyl alcohol:

Ethylamine converts undergo diazotization to give Ethanol.
CH3CH2NH2EthylamineHONOCH3CH2OHEthylalcohol+N2Nitrogen+H2Owater
Step 4: Formation of Ethanal:

Ethyl alcohol when undergoes oxidation, it forms Ethanal.
CH3CH2OHEthylalcoholoxidationCH3CH2CHOEthanal

Step 5: Formation of Ethanoic acid:

At last, ethanal on oxidation gives ethanoic acid as the final product.

CH3CH2CHOEthanaloxidationCH3COOHEthanoicacid
Hence, the conversion of Propanoic acid into Ethanoic acid has been explained above.
