Solution

Instructions:
  1. Mention the initial cooperation between Aurangzeb and the Rajputs and how the relations soured later on.
  2. Analyse the relationship between the two parties on the basis of the conflicts that took place between them.
Solution: Initially, Aurangzeb had cordial relations with the Rajputs. He tried to get as much support from them and even gave them high mansabs.

However, he later came into conflict with the rulers of Mewar and Marwar - the two most important kingdoms in Rajasthan, which made it difficult for Aurangzeb to continue his cordial relations with them. The reason for the conflict in Marwar was due to Aurangzeb’s denial to acknowledge the posthumous son of Jaswant Singh, Ajit Singh, as the successor.

The Rajputs under Durgadas also protested against Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb marched up to Ajmer, occupied Jodhpur, and defeated the Rajputs. The kingdom of Mewar supported Marwar’s cause which in turn led them into a conflict with Aurangzeb. A war ensued between Aurangzeb and Mewar and was finally concluded with a treaty.

The above events show that Aurangzeb’s interference in the internal politics of the Rajputs led to the souring of relations between them.
