Biomes are very large ecological areas on the Earth's surface and each has its own characteristic climate, fauna (animals) and flora (plants) that has adapted to the environment.
Major biomes of India are tropical rainforests, deciduous forests, deserts and sea coasts. The given image depicts the tropical rainforests.
The identification can be done based on the following points -
- Tropical rainforests receive highest rainfall and moderate temperatures which results in heavy growth of all types of plants. These forests show rich biodiversity of plants with buttress roots (jackfruit trees), climbers (grapevine), epiphytes (orchids), etc.
- Trees of different heights form vertical strata. Top layer receives a good amount of sunlight but the bottom layers are overshadowed and have adapted to a low amount of sunlight.
- Deserts have the least rainfall and extremely high temperature. These areas have sparse vegetation consisting of deep rooted shrubs (desert lily), ephemerals (short-lived plants like thale cress) and succulent xerophytes (cactus).
- Sea coast is an area where land and water meet. These areas have rich biodiversity.
- The tundra region has precipitation in the form of snow and extremely low temperatures. This biome is characterised with scanty vegetation in the form of grasses, mosses and lichens. It is found in regions like the Arctic region and high mountain regions.
