describe any five advantages and disadvantages of coalition government

A coalition government is a government formed by an alliance of two or more political parties, when no single party enjoys majority support of the members in a legislature.

It has the following advantages:

a. Coalition era experiences more effective form of power sharing between the Centre and the states, which is an integral part of Indian politics,
b. The coalition government marked the presence of regional parties at the centre, who are sharing power with the national party.
c. It has also ensured that regional parties are part of the decision making process impacting the country at large.
d. It has allowed regional parties to act as game changers in the Indian politics demanding special economic package for their states.
e. It certainly has given representation to various provinces and regions at the centre and has also bridged regional disparities.
f. Coalition governments rather have expanded and strengthened the idea of democracy as it has made democratic system more inclusive in nature involving various groups and regions whose interest parties seeks to represent.


Disadvantages:

a. Coalition imposes certain restraints, on the Prime Minister as he cannot take independent decisions.
b. It is characterised by instability , as even any party withdraws support, the government may fall short of majority .
c. Coalitions are mostly based on politics of opportunities , with regional players joining hand for power.
d. The coalition thus imposes political compulsions on the the Prime Minister who he has to accommodate interests of various factions and parties which are part of the coalition
e. It is difficult to reach at consensus on various policy matters in coalition, causing delays and red tapism.
