Question

Describe giving all practical details, how would you prepare :

(a) copper sulphate crystals from a mixture of charcoal and black copper oxide,

(b) zinc sulphate crystals from zinc dust (powdered zinc and zinc oxide),

(c) sodium hydrogen carbonate crystals.

(d) Calcium sulphate from calcium carbonate.

Solution

A)Copper oxide and charcoal, when heated together, will lead to the formation of copper metal and carbon dioxide. The copper metal can be reacted with sulphuric acid to form copper sulphate solution. Prepare a saturated solution of the copper solution. Suspend a seed from the thread in the solution to act as a base for crystallisation. Leave it for some time. Copper sulphate crystals will form on the seed.

CuO+CCu+CO

Cu+H2SO4SO2+CuSO4+H2O

B)Zinc dust with dilute sulphuric acid gives Zinc sulphate.

Zn+H2SO4ZnSO4+H2

Here impure zinc is used because it has more surface area. More the surface area more will be the speed of the reaction. As well as impure zinc acts as an electrochemical cell.
C)
NaHCO3 is made by saturating a solution of sodium carbonate with carbon dioxide. The white crystalline powder of sodium hydrogen carbonate is less soluble gets separated.

Na2CO3+H2O+CO2NaHCO3

On an industrial scale, sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) is obtained as an intermediate product in Solvay process for the manufacture of sodium carbonate

D)
Dissolving CaCO3 in sulphuric acid (H2SO4) solution, you'll get CaSO4 salt.

CaCO3(s)+H2SO4(aq)CaSO4(s)+CO2(g)+H2O(l)

Calcium is a very strong reducing agent, its reduction potential is 2.87 V. Reduction potential of Hydrogen is 0 V
So calcium will displace hydrogen ions from the sulphuric acid
