Sergius defied Russian commanders in spite of not having orders, he led a cavalry charge on his own responsibility. He led from the front, being the first man to sweep through the enemy guns. Catherine describes gallant splendid Bulgarians with their swords and eyes flashing, thundering down like an avalanche and scattering the wretched Serbian dandies like chaff.
