Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

Taj Mahal is a marble statue. Here are some points how pollution affects Taj Mahal.

Air pollution results in the discoloration of its marble is due to corrosion.

The gaseous oxides (CO 2 , NO 2 and SO 2 ) present in the air as chemical pollutants mix with water in air to form acids such as carbonic acid, nitric acid and sulphuric acid. This acid comes down as acid rain and cause corrosion of marble statues. Calcium carbonate present in marble is transformed into other compounds by reaction with acids as follows:

CO 2 + H 2 O + CaCO 3 → Ca(HCO 3 ) 2

CaCO 3 + H 2 SO 4 → CaSO 4 + CO 2 + H 2 O
