Diagram: 2 Marks

A funnel arrangement is used for dissolving hydrogen chloride gas in water to prevent and minimize back-suction of water and to provide a large surface area for the absorption of HCl gas.
For this purpose, the gas coming out from the arrangement is dissolved in water by means of an inverted funnel. The rim of the funnel is placed in such a way that it just touches the surface of the water in the trough. When back-suction occurs, the water rises up in the funnel and due to this level outside the funnel falls creating an air gap between the rim of the funnel and the surface of the water. The pressure outside and inside the funnel equalizes due to which the water which had risen in the funnel falls down again. This process continues till the water in the trough gets saturated with hydrogen chloride gas.
