Crude oil or petroleum is separated using fractional distillation method. The principle used behind this method is that different liquids boil at different temperatures. So, crude oil is heated at different temperatures and the rising vapours are condensed separately. The condensed fractions are the hydrocarbons like petrol, kerosene, diesel, petroleum jelly etc. Uncondensed gases are used for making LPG.
